Southwest Florida Water Management District makes major land purchase in the Weeki Wachee Preserve
In 1992, a group of local residents along the Nature Coast in Florida founded a land trust called The Gulf Coast Conservancy, with a mission to protect as many acres of coastal lands as we could. We create a conversation between the landowners and the funding agencies and we keep the negotiations alive as long as all parties are willing to be engaged. Initially, we committed to facilitating the preservation of 3,000 acres – but thus far, we’re celebrating saving almost 15,000 acres, thanks to the financial backing of programs such as Florida Forever.
A recent acquisition of 589 additional acres by the Southwest Florida Water Management District represents the completion of years of effort by many different public and private partners.
I’m proud to have played a role in these endeavors. Please click below for more information.
